Hobby Room

Hobby Room

Australian summer (2004 to 2005) project

Finding a dedicated place to carry out this hobby is not always easy. Spare rooms in our house are hard to come and I wasn’t allowed to send one or more of the kids off to boarding school or military college! I got away with having a few modules in the living room for a period of time but the solution here was to to enclose the double car port.

The plan was to ensure the area could be converted to a lock up garage or even back to a carport if we ever move house in the future.

The first picture shows the starting point, the second with three removable timber panels in place and the final larger picture the front wall in place and finished. One of the panels is a hidden door giving access from the front.

Reclaimed timbers, doors and windows were used as much as possible. The two photos below show some of the interior shortly after completion. Facing the back yard with two outward opening doors and showing the hidden access door for the front.

The hobby room has been a great success. In 2007 it now has now been in use for a couple of years and an L shaped On30 layout under construction around two walls with plenty of storage underneath, a spray booth set up under one window and two modelling tables, one under the double window and one portable table. It’s gets plenty of use and is very well insulated with some good natural light and plenty of overhead lighting.
